IMPORTANT FACTS ABOUT UNACCOMPANIED MINORS IN OAKLAND:
Since 2012, over 295 children from Central America have been enrolled in the Oakland school district while they await deportation hearings
Most unaccompanied minors are living with family and friends, working nights and weekends to pay their bills. Others live alone, supporting themselves entirely.
Approximately 75% are in high school, 15% in elementary, and 10% in middle school.
Most of these students have escaped from gang violence and other dangerous living circumstances in their home countries. An estimated 75% qualify for some kind of relief, like asylum or special immigrant juvenile status.
In 2014, the Oakland Unified School District hired an Unaccompanied Minor Specialist to support these students and connect them to mental health, legal and community resources.
